A walk through Prehistory !

We had a fun time visiting the Chauvet Cave in Ardèche on Thursday 12 October

The 6ème students had 3 hours of quality time with their friends on the bus ride there, during which they read history magazines, watched series and took silly pictures together, and played some very competitive video games against each other. Once at Grotte Chauvet, our tour guides took us into the cave replica that took 2 ½ years to build! We admired the colorful recreations of 30,000-year-old paintings, learned how they were made, and discussed what our ancestors might have been thinking as they made these amazing creations.

Our tour guide also led a workshop about evolution, discussing our different human ancestors and animal relatives. By then everyone was ready for lunch, which we ate outside in the beautiful warm weather. In the afternoon, we explored the interactive Gallery and gazed in awe at realistic statues of gigantic animals that once roamed the area, such as the wooly mammoth and the Irish Elk, whose antlers were 3 meters wide.

At the end of the day, we saw a spectacular 360° light show called ANIMAL. The animations and exciting music made this activity most students’ favorite of the day.
